There was one fairly obvious challenge regarding this logo: the sensitivity and symbolic aspect of tobacco in First Nation culture. We kept it simple – to show respect to the meaning, while providing graphic elements showing tobacco in a positive light.
There were many elements originally intended to be used, but after focusing on the potential use of the logo, we decided to simplify it and just show tobacco (leaf). We tend to incorporate multiple elements or objects when dealing with subject matter as involved as this. In this case we added elements of the eagle (pride), wisdom and trustworthiness.
The colours were chosen for their cooling effect, as well as their softness and calming nature. We didn’t want any browns or yellows as it seemed to not carry the clean/healing feeling we were striving for. The result was a logos that represent the desired message of education and health.
