Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada

Briefing

We were honoured to take on this beautiful, culturally important design challenge: the need for a balanced and respectful representation of Indigenous culture in Canada that captures the essence of each of the three main factions in a single image.

Approach

Consultation with First Nations, Inuit and Métis partners and stakeholder groups informed our selection of elements; research with museum curators and historians on artifact archives inspired design choices and ensured culturally relevant meaning.

Responsibilities

  • Art Direction
  • Branding and Indentity
  • Indigenous Consulting
  • Interactive Design
  • Publishing/Print Design
  • Research/Development

Result

A mosaic logo with elements holding critical meaning for each group, fused together by a circle that evokes the traditional medicine wheel and the four geographical directions; the book cover echoes the indelible “fingerprint” of Canada’s Indigenous people.
